Suited to

Who books the non-smoking king

Couples and solo travellers

One king bed suits two people properly. If you are travelling alone and staying more than a night, the extra floor space over a double room is worth having.

Travelling healthcare staff

Southern Regional Medical Center is just over a mile up Upper Riverdale Road. Non-smoking, quiet hours enforced and a weekly rate is a workable combination for a contract that runs several weeks.

Drivers on a layover

The non-smoking wing tends to be the quieter side, the desk never closes, and parking is at the door. If you are sleeping during the day, this is the room to ask for.

Business travellers

Free WiFi with no login, a desk-free but workable room, and a rate that will not raise an eyebrow on an expense claim.

The room

A quiet king room on the non-smoking side

The non-smoking king is a single-bed room built around one king bed, which means the floor space works differently from our double rooms. There is more room to move, more room to put a bag down without stepping over it, and enough space to sit somewhere other than the edge of the mattress. For two people staying several nights, that difference matters more than the extra bed would.

Every room here has exterior access — your door opens onto the property rather than into an interior corridor. Practically, that means you park, open the door, and you are in the room. Ground-floor rooms open straight onto the property; upper floors are reached by lift. Either way there is no lobby to cross. For a room you are checking into late and leaving early, that is the single biggest convenience the building offers.

Inside, the room is set up for people who are actually living in it for a few days rather than passing through for six hours. There is a flat-screen TV with cable, air conditioning you set yourself rather than a building system someone else controls, a mini-fridge and a microwave, and a private bathroom with towels changed daily. The WiFi is free, has no login page and no daily charge, which is a small thing until you have stayed somewhere that charges by the device.

The non-smoking wing is a genuinely separate part of the property from the smoking wing, not the same corridor with different signage. That is the reason to choose this room over the smoking king — both are $72, so you pay nothing extra for a room that has never been smoked in.

Practical detail

What the stay is actually like

  • Parking is free and directly outside the rooms, so luggage goes from the boot to the room in one trip. The lot is lit through the night, which matters if you are arriving after dark or leaving before it gets light.
  • The front desk is staffed 24 hours a day. There is no arrival window to hit and no key box to find — if you pull in at 3am, someone checks you in. Check-in is from 3:00 PM and check-out is 11:00 AM, and if you need to arrive later than 8:00 PM on the day you have booked, a phone call holds the room.
  • Quiet hours run from 10:00 PM to 8:00 AM and they are enforced. A good share of the people staying here work nights, so this is treated as a real policy rather than a sign on the wall.
  • There is no restaurant, bar or breakfast service on the property. What there is: complimentary coffee at the front desk between 7:00 and 11:00 AM, a mini-fridge and microwave in the room, and food delivery welcomed to your door or the desk.

Included in the rate

What is in the room, and why it matters

Free WiFi

No login page, no device limit and no daily charge. If you are working from the room or streaming in the evening, it is one less thing to sort out at the desk.

Free parking at the door

Rooms open directly onto the property with parking immediately outside, so luggage and tools go straight in. The lot stays lit through the night.

Air conditioning you control

The thermostat is in your room, not on a building system. Guests sleeping during the day set it how they want it.

Mini-fridge

Milk, medication, leftovers, tomorrow’s lunch. On a stay of more than two nights it stops being a nicety.

Microwave

Reheat what you brought back rather than going out again. Guests on weekly rates use it more than anything else in the room.

Cable TV

A flat-screen with cable channels, which on a long evening in an unfamiliar town is worth more than it sounds.

Private bathroom

Every room has its own, with towels changed daily and more available from the desk at any hour.

Daily housekeeping

Rooms are serviced every day. If you are sleeping days, tell the desk and we will skip yours and leave fresh towels instead.

24-hour front desk

Someone is at the desk at every hour, so arrival time is never the problem it is at properties with a check-in window.

Food delivery welcome

Drivers can bring orders to your room door or leave them at the desk. There is no restaurant on site, so this is how most guests eat in.

The area

Getting around from the door

You are on Old Dixie Highway, which at this point is US 19/41 — the same road that becomes Tara Boulevard heading south. I-75 Exit 235 is less than a mile north. Everything below is within a few minutes of the room.

  • a 24-hour Waffle House about a hundred yards up the road
  • Cantina1942, a Mexican restaurant on Tara Boulevard about a quarter of a mile away that serves until midnight on weeknights and 3am on Fridays and Saturdays
  • Drugbuddies Pharmacy on Tara Boulevard, about a quarter of a mile away
  • a 24-hour Marathon station on Old Dixie Highway, about half a mile north

Longer stays

Staying more than a few nights

Weekly rates start at seven nights and monthly at 28, and they are quoted by phone rather than published. Long-stay guests keep the same room throughout, so nothing has to be packed and moved mid-stay, and payment is settled at the desk each week with no lease. For a single traveller on a multi-week contract, the non-smoking king is usually the room to ask about.

Questions

About the non-smoking king room

Can I check in before 3:00 PM?

Sometimes, if the room is ready. Call the front desk on the morning of arrival and they will tell you honestly whether it is possible for your dates.

Is late check-out available?

Ask at the desk on the morning you are leaving. When the room is not already committed to an arriving guest we will usually accommodate it, but it cannot be promised in advance.

How often is the room cleaned?

Daily, with fresh towels. If you are sleeping during the day and would rather not be disturbed, tell the desk and we will skip the room and leave towels for you instead.

Which payment methods do you take?

Cash or card, paid at the front desk when you arrive. Nothing is charged when you request the room online.

Do I need ID at check-in?

Yes — a valid government-issued photo ID in the name the room is booked under. This applies to every stay without exception.

Can I smoke outside the room?

Smoking is not permitted inside a non-smoking room. If you smoke, the smoking king at $72 is a separate wing built for it.

Is there a deposit?

There may be a refundable deposit depending on the length of your stay and how you are paying. The desk will tell you the amount at check-in.
